During Paris Fashion Week earlier this year, Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen showed the brands Autumn/Winter 2012 collection. The collection was bizarre and fluffy and hardly what you would call “clothes.”
Burton says she wanted the pieces “to feel like they were growing and sprouting” and since half the collection reminded me of sea anemones, she was pretty dead-on.
Because still-photos from the runway just don’t do the collection justice, director Trevor Undi (Kanye West’s “Lost In The World” video) compiled a beautiful music video to pay homage to behind-the-scenes and runway clips from the Autumn/Winter 2012 collection.
Something about this video reminds me of ballet, well-groomed poodles, and beautiful aliens. Watch the video, it’s breathtaking and hypnotizing. I’ve literally got this on loop and can’t tear my eyes away.
The video comes hot on the heels of the McQueen Resort 2013 collection. Where the A/W 2012 collection was all sorts of tulle gowns and furry leg warmers, this Resort 2013 collection is all metallic pantsuits with flare legs and giant bustier style metal belts. The resort collection is like a modern take on the Joan of Arc ideal. Strong yet feminine.
Sarah Burton calls the collection “back to the basics.”
“I wanted to bring everything back to the body. The proportions are extreme: high waits, an elongated leg, and a peaked shoulder. There’s a harder, more precise, masculine edge that’s a reaction to the roundness and the sickly-sweet femininity of the last collection.”
