A source at his London office confirmed to the Mail Online: “It is a tragic loss. We are not making a comment at this time out of respect for the McQueen family.”
Police didn't directly comment about how Mr. McQueen died, but said the death wasn't being treated as suspicious.
According to the Scotland Yard report, "Police were called by London Ambulance Service at approximately 10:20 a.m. [Thursday] regarding a man found dead ...The deceased is believed to be 40 years old and from London. Next of kin have been informed but formal identification is awaited. A postmortem examination will be arranged in due course. The death is being treated as non-suspicious at this time."
Mr. McQueen was the creative chief behind "Alexander McQueen," the brand he founded in the 1990s and sold to Gucci Group in 2000.
"McQueen influenced a whole generation of designers. His brilliant imagination knew no bounds as he conjured up collection after collection of extraordinary designs," said Alexandra Shulman, the editor of British Vogue.
"At one level he was a master of the fantastic, creating astounding fashions shows that mixed design, technology and performance and on another he was a modern day genius whose gothic aesthetic was adopted by women the world over."
According to close friends and colleagues, McQueen slipped into depression after Isabella Blow, the eccentric stylist who discovered him committed suicide in 2007. And he was said to be devastated by the death of his mother, which happened just a few weeks ago on Feb. 2.
The British fashion designer is known for producing some of the most controversial collections of the last two decades. It's so tragic that he took his own life. He'll be missed greatly!
