The one thing everyone was talking about during Paris Fashion Week was whether Olivier Rousteing would be able to impress with his first collection for Balmain.

26-year old Olivier took over for designer Christophe Decarnin when Christophe failed to turn up to the A/W’11 catwalk show due to his health problems. Christophe was the designer for Balmain for 6 years and many credit him for bringing the label back on the map.

Olivier didn’t just come out of nowhere though; he had actually been working alongside Christophe since 2009 so he knows a thing or two about Balmain.

Olivier showed off his first collection this week in Paris and he did a rockin’ job. He remained true to the label, which is all about the mini-dresses, sequence outfits and sharp shouldered jackets.

The collection also focused on Balmain’s couture roots, which Rousteing said was very important for him.

When asked if he saw himself the new Ghesquière, who started out as a hidden talent at Balenciaga, Rousteing said: “I can only cross my fingers and hope for such a career!”

Olivier got rave reviews from everyone important in fashion. "Viva Las Vegas…and budding young fashion talent," WWD wrote.

The Wall Street Journal's Christina Binkley also praised the designer saying, "From the look of things, Mr. Rousteing has a bright future."

I honestly don’t see the difference between Christophe’s work and Olivier. He really did stay true to the brand, but he also brought his own touches, which resulted in an awesome collection.

Kudos to Olivier!
