How to Re-Wear Old Clothes: The Seven Year Rule
You know those amazing pointy suede Gucci pumps you have in your closet that you bought 3 years ago on sale? You’ve been wondering if it’s ok to dust them off and wear them again, but you’re not sure if they’re a few seasons old or if they qualify as vintage yet.

Okay, so I’m talking about myself. I really did buy a pair of Gucci suede pumps on sale for $200 (which is unheard of!) down from $795. They’re a little outdated now, so how long do I wait before I can proudly call them “vintage Gucci’s” and wear them again? Apparently the golden rule is: wait 7 years. Gives new meaning to the seven year itch, huh?

Apparently Christina Ricci had a similar dilemma lately. She says she loves to keep old clothing, but is unsure when she can re-wear it without looking outdated.

“I asked my stylist: ‘What’s the rule for when something becomes vintage and not just, like, last season?’” she tells Nylon magazine. “Seven years, apparently. So, seven years later I’ve brought my Alaïa dresses out again.”

Christina always looks fabulous on the red carpet, and while she has a stylist to pick out her chic looks, she says knowing your body type and how to dress for it is also key.

”When you’re as short as me, you kind of have to” get clothes tailored, she explains. “And you kind of know [your] proportions. I spend so much time in fittings and looking in the mirror, so at a certain point you kind of become aware of what works on your body.”

How to dress if you’re petite like Christina:

A few can’t miss pieces are long pants with heels. Have one pair of perfectly fitted pants with a hem that almost touches the ground—get those tailored with a pair of sky high heels. It’ll give the illusion that you’ve got fabulously long legs.

Vertical lines also work wonders on petite girls. It’ll give the illusion that you’re much taller than you actually are.

Skip the long coat. It’ll make you look short and stumpy. Go for a shorter coat that hits just below the hips. It’ll make you look more balanced.

Avoid ankle boots: Sure, they look great on Gisele Bundchen. But what doesn’t look great on her? Unless you have legs for days, avoid wearing ankle boots. They cut straight across the ankles and make our legs seem shorter and thicker. A big no-no.
