You have to admire the concept behind AGAIN: that the in-again-out-again fashion cycle is more than just the industry machine on repeat, that this philosophy can also have a personal meaning.
Designer Amber Kekich celebrates not just vintage technically speaking, but the spirit of it—considering why some fashions stand the test of time and how to interpret that. Along those lines, AGAIN is rife with "investment pieces"—the one-piece jumpsuits and the textured fabrics are standouts in particular—garments you don't just wear, but own and make your own. Like all really great clothes, they're pieces that tell individual stories.
We chatted with Amber about how she got her line off the ground, music-fashion hub Coachella, and where the label's going next.
Tell us about the name AGAIN.
We are so inspired by vintage and the idea of passing down our garments, impressing our grandchildren with "What we used to wear" and hopefully they could wear them AGAIN. Its a constant cycle!
How'd you get your start designing?
I started young, everyone's a designer. I started professionally by going to FIDM and was given the chance to work at multiple denim and sportswear companies here in LA.
How would you describe your brand right now?
Evolving. It's a lifestyle with something for everyone. We want to make women feel confident and comfortable, and to be presented as they should be.
Who is the girl wearing your clothes, where is she going?
Our girl steps out of the box a bit, she knows her body and wants to be a woman, not a girl. She is practical, going to work, and hitting the town. She respects fashion, quality, and is not your average tee shirt and jeans girl. She likes to stand out for all the right reasons.
What are some of your favorite pieces from your current collection?
I am [the] number one fan of our pant suit. Its sexy, complimentary to any figure, and comfortable.
What's the biggest challenge being a designer and running your own company?
The hard part about being a designer is being practical. You have to understand what will sell, along with being creative, two sides of the brain are always demanded, and [you must] do it all on a strict calendar.
Also seeing how fast things can be knocked off, redone, and sold so cheap. It's very intimidating to see what an H&M can do and how much support they get.
Now being a designer and running a company is a whole other animal. You aren't just a creative anymore. You are forced to make decisions, participate in conversations and market yourself, all things that take away from the creative thought. We aren't just making clothing, we are creating a brand.
You wore your own creations at Coachella and was photographed. How do you come up with your music festival outfits?
Well, this is the fun part. I can make stuff for myself that I don't have to care about selling or getting a positive reaction. I love going into a fabric store and taking a couple yards of the most outlandish fabrics and making something of it. My friends always laugh. Music festivals are easy, you just have to be comfortable, and remember that the photos are something you will show your kids one day to prove to them you were once cool too.
Who are some designers you look up to?
Alexander McQueen always blew my mind, he too was inspired by the past, but his vision is something I don't think I could ever fully think of myself. Karl Lagerfeld is spread so thin, and you would never know. Helmut Lang makes a mean suit jacket.
If you could dress any celeb, who would it be?
I would like to think of our clothes more along the lines of a "model off duty" look. I would love to see another designer wearing something of ours. Always the most flattering.
What's next for AGAIN?
To keep perfecting our path. We are really developing, growing, and refining our woman.
