Before You Make a Bag Investment

Before you spend that tax return on the next It bag, make sure it’s not a purchase you’ll regret. Here’s a few things to consider before you splurge.

Color: You’ve already made up your mind that you’re gonna go for the splurge now here comes the hard stuff, neutral or bold? If you're leaning toward a bright bag here’s something to try: buy a cheap bag (20 bucks or so) in a similar color. In a few weeks you may forget all about the bold blue Saint Laurent Sac du Jour because the blue-bag-shaped hole in your heart has been filled.

Classic or Trendy? Here comes the next hurdle, should you buy a classic style or a trend that you’ve had your eye on? A Fendi bug bag or a classic Chanel? How about a compromise: buy the classic bag and get a fun wallet or keychain that’s more trendy.

Shape: Crossbody? Top handle? Tote? Wondering what shape will give you the most bang for your buck? Well it’s a process of elimination. A tote is for toting things and will probably just get banged up, so that’s out. Crossbody bags, top handles and lady bags are worth the splurge but miniatures and clutches? Not so much. They don’t get as much wear, so they're not the best splurge-worthy bags.

Upkeep: As much as we love the Chanel linen bags they’re bound to get dirty. The same goes for anything in a light color, suede bags are a hassle too. If you’re willing to go the extra mile when it comes to cleaning your new bag then this is no big deal, but if you want something that’s going to last forever opt for a durable shape, a dark color, and a strong fabric.
