Fashion Star Episode 1 Recap
The much anticipated new design show, Fashion Star debuted last night and definitely soared above other similar shows like Project Runway.

I wouldn’t’ say it was better, just different. Before we even met the mentors or contestants, the show kicked off with a flashy dance number that turned into the first runway presentation. The show continued to present each of the contestants runway collections which showcased three pieces from each designer.

There was no workroom drama, the mentors Jessica Simpson, Nicole Richie and John Varvatos had pretty small roles and there was generally very little tension. Well, except for the Jessica Simpson and designer Nicholas Bowes fiasco.

Jessica Simpson and Nicole Richie critiqued contestant Nicholas’ collection of leather jackets, denim shorts and cowboy boots, but instead of taking the criticism in stride, Nicholas snapped back, “It’s very hard to understand the girls giving advice about men’s fashion.”

Oh no he didn’t!

Simpson snapped back, “I’m a little bit offended. A lot a bit, actually. To talk down to a woman in this business? We’re running the world right now. I really kind of want to hit you across the face right now.”

Luckily for Jess, Nicholas was sent home at the end of the episode, because c’mon, what dude wants to wear cut-off denim shorts and cowboy boots that isn’t a member of YMCA?

At the end of the episode, six contestants received offers from H&M, Saks Fifth Avenue and Macys. The clothes chosen for H&M were very cute. A cap-sleeved tunic dress with a cut-out back and a suede men’s blazer are now available online. The clothes picked for Macy’s were actually kind of boring. The skirt chosen for Saks Fifth Avenue was a black sequined skirt with zipper and it’s already sold out.
