The woman who inspired the Hermes Birkin bag, Jane Birkin herself, calls the bag a “trivial piece of heavy luggage.”

You shut your mouth Jane Birkin! Do you know how many rich housewives worship at the altar of the Hermes Birkin bag!? Like, so many.

Hermes named it’s most expensive bag after actress and singer Jane Birkin, but she says that she doesn’t quite understand the appeal of the oversized handbag, but is happy that the bags cost so much because Hermes gives a lot of money to her charities because of those bags.

The average Birkin bag costs around $9,000 to $150,000, so Birkin (the woman) decided that Hermes should hand over some money to charity.

“I got Hermes to fork out for my charities once I saw the fortune they were making. A certain amount of money every year goes straight to my charity and it will continue to after my death…We use some of the money to feed the poor people who can’t afford to eat in France. I sold one of my Birkin bags for $163,000 to help the Japanese Red Cross,” Jane Birkin tells Women’s Wear Daily.

Look at that, one expensive handbag does some good charitable work, while rich ladies gets to cling onto one of the worlds most expensive handbags and look fancier than all their friends.

But here’s the kicker, Jane Birkin doesn’t really think the bag is THAT awesome.

“So that rather trivial piece of heavy luggage has done a lot of good in the world,” says Birkin.

Speaking of expensive, a Hermes Birkin bag was auctioned off this week for $203,150. The red crocodile Birkin bag was auctioned off in Dallas, Texas for nearly a quarter of a million dollars. As far as I know, none of that money went to charity. It was just a damn expensive purse.

That auction set the record for most expensive sale of any handbag at any auction.

“This is an extraordinary example of one of the world’s most exceptional handbags, and this was certainly an exceptional price, exceeding our highest expectations at every corner,” said the auctioneer.

There were three other bags sold during the auction that each went for $113,525, $95,600, and $80,663 respectively. Each bag broke the record as they were being sold, until the big world’s most expensive bag hit the podium.
