Karl Lagerfeld Interviews Himself on Camera
January 27, 2012 by: MADISON VANDERBERG

There is no one like Karl Lagerfeld. His opinionated views, combined with his iconic style that looks like a cross between a fashionable priest and a renaissance vampire killer makes him one of the most bizarre and hilarious people in fashion.
Net-A-Porter has just produced this 8 minute long video featuring Karl interviewing himself. It’s part informative, enlightening, but mostly just funny. There’s just something about an old guy in wrap-around shades talking about poor people that just makes me chuckle.
Here are the best quotes from the video:
On himself: “Myself in 3 words?” says Lagerfeld, “No I need more than 3 words, I’m not that simple.”
On himself, again: Karl 1 asks Karl 2, “What do you think is “fresh and relevant” and Karl 2 responds, “I think I am quite fresh and relevant.”
On muses versus fashion lovers: “Fashion freaks? I am not too crazy for them,” says Lagerfeld.
On being “improvised”: “I never prepare anything,” he says, “What I say is all improvised. I’m a totally improvised person. I’m a very professional improviser.”
On why poor people are more chic than rich people: “If you come and ask me, ‘I want to be chic,’ there’s little hope to become chic. There are peasants in the country who are beyond chic in their poor rags and [there are] very rich women who are not chic in the most expensive dress. The minute you ask the question, I will only answer to be polite.”
The three fashion staples: “It depends on the body,” says Lagerfeld, “White shirt, jeans and a jacket. Those are the three basic things that everybody needs, there’s not even a gender problem.”
On what he would take to a deserted island: “What would you take on a deserted island?” wonders Karl, “I would never go there, so this is not my problem.”
