Manolo Blahnik: I\'m Not a Fashion Designer
There’s this thing called being humble, and then there’s this thing that Manolo Blahnik did, which is claim he’s not a designer even though he’s been designing luxury shoes since the 70’s.

Anyways, let’s let him pretend like he’s not sitting atop the shoe empire that he totally knows he is.

“Designing makes me feel ‘up.’ We used to say ‘high’ in the 1970s. I don’t consider myself a fashion designer. I just do shoes that I love. It’s selfish. But this is what I love to do!”

Have you ever done a google image search for Manolo Blahnik? It’s just like all photos of shoes and Carrie Bradshaw from “Sex and the City.”

Anyways, Blahnik’s success is because he’s a perfectionist, “I do and re-do things that I used to do in a flash, because I want to be more perfectionist about these things. Maybe it sounds pompous and pretentious, but that’s the way I feel.”

Even though Blahnik is pushing 70, he has no plans to retire, “In a years time I’ll be 70. It makes me happy that Armani is 80 because I’m not going to be retiring!”

Blahnik can’t retire because then people would wear more Manolo Blahnik knock-offs. Manolo admits he was terrified when he saw some women wearing fake Manolos.

“They were unmistakably my design but in a wonderful color I had never seen before,” says the designer, “So I asked, ‘Where did you get your shoes?’ ‘Manolo Blahnik,’ they said. I said, “No, my dear: these are not Manolo, these are plastic! With a horrid little plastic buckle!”

Moral of the story: Don’t buy knock-offs, because they are horrid and plastic.
