Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen's $39,000 Bag Sells Out
October 10, 2011 by: PAULENE BROOKS

Why do I say infamous? Well, the backpack costs $39,000. And no I did not accidentally add an extra 0. It actually costs $39,000. Who had that kind of money? Oh right, the Olsens.
"It was the first thing that sold off the shelf," Ashley said at the Paris launch of their new handbag collection. "During our last economic crisis in the U.S., the only thing that went up was Hermes."
Barney's Fashion Director Amanda Brooks has only good things to say about the backpack and saw it as an “to buy” item because it's an “investment”.
"If you were ever going to spend $39,000 on a bag, that's the bag you should buy," she told Fashionista back in July. . "There's enough design to make it interesting and beautiful but they truly are classic bags -- and I think you also might be the only one who has it."
Who carries a backpack that costs 39k? Let me guess? Not so starving students? Is there even such a thing? The only person that I know could afford such a bag pack is Blair Waldorf on Gossip Girl and she's not even a real person…she's a character on a TV show.
Just to put things in perspective, you can buy a brand new BMW 3-series for the same price. Hmm...buy a backpack or buy a luxury car?
$39,000 sounds ridiculous, but obviously they had no trouble selling out right? (Unless they only made a handful of them...hmm). The same thing happened when Victoria Beckham designed a bag that cost a whopping $14,000.
Beckham launched a collection of bags on Net-a-Porter's international site in December and the $13,950 crocodile design sold out within the hour.
I'm sorry, but that just sounds ridiculous. I wonder if there were only 2 or 3 produced in the first place. That's a lot of money to spend on a bag that's not a seasoned brand like Hermes. Funny enough, you can get a hand made Hermes bag for less than the price of Victoria and the Olsen's bag. Of course I'm talking about the standard leather, let's not even get into the crocodile.
Victoria Beckham has become a very trusted celebrity designer and I actually see her having a very long career in fashion, but it's just too soon to pay prices like 39k or 14k for somewhat new designers.
What do you guys think? Would you pay top top top dollars for an Olsen brand if you had the money?
