The Met Gala is the fashion world’s answer to the Oscars. The style is more daring, the attendees come from every inch of the entertainment world, and overall it’s just so much more fabulous than the Oscars.

This year’s Costume Institute Gala Benefit is celebrating the opening of the Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations exhibition and the whole event is co-chaired by Carey Mulligan, Vogue editor Anna Wintour and designer Miuccia Prada

Here are the Best Dressed Stars from the 2012 Met Gala:

Camilla Belle: The young actress looked lovely in a Ralph Lauren Collection ivory tulle beaded dress with champagne python sandals. She looks like she was painted in gold flakes.

Scarlet Johansson: I wish Johansson had put more effort into her hair, but her Dolce & Gabbana dress is ah-mah-zing. This one-of-a-kind gown was made of a bustier embroidered with gold thread and pearls and a nude colored long tulle skirt.

Carey Mulligan: Serving as one of the co-chairs of the fashion fete, Mulligan wore Prada in respect to the night’s honoree, Miuccia Prada. Mulligan’s dress was part gold sequined halter top part silver metallic skirt. She looked like a fashionable knight in shining armor.

January Jones: Jones was wearing a custom yellow Versace dress. It was reminiscent of the blue one she wore to the 2010 Emmy Awards. The bright dress featured mirrored paneling, which made everything pop even more.

Gwyneth Paltrow: Paltrow was wearing a short Prada dress. They call it the mullet dress because it’s short in front and long in back. She didn’t see the dress until her stylist brought it over to her this morning. She was also, gasp, flashing some side boob.

Rihanna: Rihanna was literally the last person to enter the party and what a fitting close to the red carpet. She literally “shut it down” in this reptilian black Tom Ford gown.

Katharine McPhee: The “Smash” actress stunned in this Ellie Saab piece. The two-piece dress/top ensemble came in a color I can only describe as tangerine salmon.

Amber Heard: The “Rum Diaries” actress may slip under the radar, but always turns heads on the red carpet. She wore this jaw-dropping custom orchid duchess bustier gown by Zac Posen.

Ginnifer Goodwin: Goodwin was the most lively star on the carpet in this bright orange in Monique Lhuiller gown.

Chanel Iman: In my opinion, Tom Ford can do no wrong. He dressed the model in a black and white figure hugging gown. The dress featured black mesh bodice and sleeves with a mock turtleneck.

Renee Zellweger: Zellweger has literally emerged from hiding in the most gorgeous Gucci dress ever. Now THIS is a dress for the Met Gala. The open back featured a tulle train that looked like feathers. It was elegant and over-the-top and perfect.

Leighton Meester: Aside from Leighton Meester’s faux tan gone wrong, she looked lovely in this gold Marchesa gown. Signature Marchesa all the way.

Gisele Bundchen: You put a super model on a red carpet and they immediately grab all the best dressed awards. Gisele rocked this black sequined gown with a major leg slit, and are those spikes on her belt? That aside, the rest of the dress rocked.

Solange Knowles: Knowles wore a bright yellow strapless gown by Rachel Roy that features s sleek train and a peplum detail at the waist. I was on the fence with this, but the more I look at it, the more I love it. Look at the way the fabric drapes across the red carpet? Love.
