The Land of the Rising Sun shines in red, white, and black over Prada this season.

Miuccia Prada is no stranger to thinking outside the box—in fact, it’s nearly expected of the designer. For spring it seems Miuccia was thinking in one: the Japanese wood block.

Prada’s spring/summer 2013 collection was a quirky mish-mash of Asian inspiration that invoked the spirit of Hello Kitty’s more mischievous sister wrapped in a deconstructed kimono. That’s right. Purr-ada.

The audience was definitely transported to a “sense of place” with the modern-meets-traditional silhouettes that utilized heavier origami folded fabrics that still managed to expose a lot of thigh. That contrast between material and proportions is what made the cutesy innocent references—big oversized faux-floral daisy appliqués and quirky glasses—appear more sinister, Kill Bill-y, and interesting.

One of the most consistently eye catching and talked about elements of the runway were those…can we call them shoes? They’re based on the Japanese geisha sandal the ‘geta,’ which Miuccia recreated for the runway in the clunky cement block shapes of platforms fastened with leather thongs over metallic toe socks with zippers. They were pretty polarizing and it’ll be interesting to see how stylists incorporate them to their look if they dare to go there.

Overall, most exciting about collections like these—kitschy and conceptual, but still wearable—is trying to imagine who might attempt them on a carpet or a night out because Prada is one of those brands that always looks right on the right girl. Fashionistas that come to mind include Bjork, Kelly Osbourne, and Solange Knowles.
