The bag is illegal because California banned the sale of snakeskin in 1970. Despite this, the bag is still being sold on Net-A-Porter and is called the Paraty handbag and is covered in leather and Python skin.
PETA sent her a video that was actually voiced over by her former “Walk The Line” co-star Joaquin Phoenix. The video relays the horror of what reptiles go through to be turned into handbags and since it’s being lectured to her by her former friend that probably made her feel really guilty.
Reese’s reps said she was shocked to find out her purse was made with real snake skin and she immediately promised to never carry the purse again.
PETA released this statement:
“"We've long known Reese to be a kind person, so we're pleased -- and not surprised -- that she is hanging up her python bag for good. We hope Reese's honest mistake will serve as a reminder for all of us to be extra-certain that what we’re buying is mock croc or fake snake."
PETA later sent Reese flowers when she ditched the bag for good.
In more uplifting news, Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Seacrest are co-producing a movie together.
Ryan has been producing the E! Kardashian franchises, so it was only a matter of time before he finally moved into producing films. Reese will also be producing the film with her Type A films production company.
It will reportedly be a romantic comedy, and is yet untitled. The flick will be written by the Grey’s Anatomy scribe, Krista Vernoff. So expect some ridiculously complicated story lines where everyone is secretly pregnant.
Reese can also be seen in the upcoming film, “This Means War” where Witherspoon plays a women who is fighting off the affections of two different men, Tom Hardy and Chris Pine.
And to make this story come full circle back to the PETA thing, Witherspoon’s “This Means War” co-star Laura Vandervoort recently did a photoshoot for PETA for their “Whose Skin Are You In?” campaign.
To make PETA proud, Witherspoon and Vandervoort can walk down the red carpet in faux snake skin (or fake skin as PETA likes to call it).
