Rihanna's Hair Evolution Over The Years
October 5, 2011 by: MADISON VANDERBERG

So what's the deal Rihanna? Why do you change your hair as often as regular people change the lint catcher in their dryer?
"We are always changing it up, experimenting, and having fun with hair," her stylists Ursula Stephen reveals. Obviously, but while most popstars change their hair from blonde to blonder, Rihanna has had mohawks, pompadours, red hair, long brown hair, and blonde hair to name a few.
"Her hairstyle typically changes depending on what's on our agenda, what she's wearing, or how she's feeling," says Stephen. "We take it day by day and event by event."
Rihanna appeared on everyone's radar in 2005 as that 17 year old pop star from Barbados. Her standout single, "Pon De Replay" was just like her hair - Nice, cute, but ultimately boring. If you can believe it, there was a time when Rihanna had a natural looking hue of long brown hair and wore normal outfits like zip-up hoodies and boot-leg jeans.
She kept the flowing brunette locks for a couple years, but 2007 was the last time we saw Rihanna with long silky brown hair. At the time she was working on her "Good Girl Gone Bad" album and debuted a very short black bob, that was basically the gateway drug into Rihanna's mohawk phase. At the release of her third studio album, Rihanna started wearing leotards exclusively and entered into what I call "the mohawk phase."
Rihanna had a little mushroom haircut that she usually wore in a mowhawk or shaved on one side and brushed into a girly pompadour. This was the phase when a lot of dudes where confused when they still found her attractive, "she's got a mowhawk, but she's still hot, right?" asked one bro to another bro.
The mohawk phase lasted forever. Sometimes she died her mane jet black, blonde, wore it wavy, curly, pin straight, or brushed to one side.
The mohawk ended in August of last year and was briefly replaced by a bright red boyish hair cut. It was one of those "bowl cuts" that little boys get when their mom isn't there to supervise the hairstylist. I don't think anyone was a fan of this look. Luckily she transitioned immediately into the "red hair" phase.
During her red phase she sometimes had mermaid-style red hair that stops at her waist, other times she had a short red bob. The red finally ended in August and Rihanna decided to go back to her roots, dying her hair back to the brown hair that originally made her famous. Ahhh full circle, a true hair evolution.
