Trend of the Week: How to Dive Into Double Denim
If you thought denim should only be reserved for your jeans or worn one item at a time, you’re not thinking about the textile enough.

Just look at some of the most photographed stars or runways this season for inspiration. DKNY worked denim into its spring/summer 2013 collection as tops paired with a simple all-white pencil skirt that’s seasonally appropriate and fit for the office and/or dinner party.

Kim Kardashian even wore a similar look while filming her reality TV show in Miami pairing it with an aqua skirt and white pumps. Balmain mixed denim into its spring/summer 2013 collection also, but with more forcefulness—head to toe with Pretty Woman crop tops and those signature Balmain shoulders in blue—that paid off in a cool ‘90s throwback way. Rihanna is also a fan of an all denim ensemble now and again, a great weekend look—a denim shirt tied at the waist over a crop top with a pair of jeans in a darker blue denim tone.

Basic guidelines to double denim:

1. Choose denim that flatters your figure (think about proportions, fit, of course, but also detailing like zippers and pockets and how they represent your own style)
2. Select contrasting shades, and play with contrasting fabrics too (a lightweight faded nearly white over your fav pair of heavier denim shorts, loosely untucked at the waist)
3. If it seems like something Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears might wear to the 2001 Video Music Awards, then do the exact opposite. Yes, it’s possible to wear head-to-toe denim and not look like you’re dressing up for a Halloween party tonight.
