Denim Trend: The Return of the Flares

It usually takes about 6 months for the ripples of runway collections to reach the masses: first they hit European editors and tastemakers, then they cross the pond, then little expensive boutiques, and then H&M and Forever 21 knock them off and they’re soon passé again. Or, in the case of skinny jeans, they become staples and endure for, like, 10 years.

So if my calculations are correct, the time of shimmying yourself around to get in to your pants is ending. We can all return to that beautiful time of flares and bell bottoms, when Lisa Frank notebooks and slap bracelets were how you spotted who was in the know.

They were spotted last season on the runways of Elie Tahari, Badgley Mischka, Theysken’s Theory, Thakoon, often paired with collared shirts.

The look has also been a celeb favorite since the beginning of this year: Sofia Vergara opted for a low key flare a few weeks ago, Katie Holmes has been spotted in dramatic bell bottoms many a time since last fall, and they’re also a favorite of Gisele.

The Sartorialist posted some incredible pictures of Parisian women wearing flares as only Parisian women can, too, so our time has totally come.

I’m just excited to feel like I’m wearing sweatpants when I’m actually wearing jeans again, because such things make me happy.

Urban Outfitters has some great options right now, and, as always, Levi’s also has you and your pins covered!
